Skiving and roller burnishing or smooth rolling

The skiving and roller burnishing production technique refers to the machine process (skiving) of micro-finishing metallic internal tube surfaces.
Drawn precision steel tubes with defined internal diameter tolerances (HPZ tubes) are normally used for this.

Cylinder tubes are required for the manufacture of hydraulic cylinders and are thereby subject to the high requirements of the piston seals on the bore of the cylinder tube. Rolling is a recognised procedure for the manufacture of seal running surfaces.

The internal diameter of the tube (bore) is processed using a combined skiving and roller burnishing tool, which moves through the tube by means of rotation and feed. The skiving tool consists of radially oscillating knives, to which cutting plates are attached. The rotating skiving tool runs along the bore of the tube and removes a constant, predetermined cut depth. However, this surface roughness is insufficient to meet the requirements of the seals. The smooth rolling rollers that follow the skiving tool are pressed against the internal surface of the tube in a radial direction and thereby produce the required surface roughness. As standard, this is 0.3-0.2 µm.

Honing

Producing cylinder tubes by honing results in having a cross-grinding pattern. The tolerances are comparable with those of a rollerburnsihed surface. For special applications customer need honed surface. Especially when tribologic properties are of great importance we recommend honed tubes. Another important field is when customer need tubes with improved inside straightness. When customers cannot use welded tubes we can supply seamless tubes with equivalent inside straightness after honing.

And the most standard use is of course when tubes need to be honed. Finally many customers who like to avoid noise in a running system take advantage of honed tubes.
